A healthy upbringing and responsible handling which fosters positive experiences - these are the basic requirements when it comes to producing a calm and reliable riding horse which is able to achieve it's full potential. In this DVD the classical training programme is followed consistently and to the letter. Even when the horse is being trained for competitive dressage, Klaus Balkenhol’s Remonte horses are also ridden cross-country and over jumps. It takes about two years to create a Remonte and Klaus shows what is expected of his horses from the ages of 3-5. The basic rule is 'make demands on the horse, but never demand too much'. The result is a physically mature horse who is able to do what is asked and who has full trust in human beings and its rider. Klaus offers a fascinating insight is into stallion grading in Germany. It's quite an eye-opener to see what's expected of 3 years old in the 90 day test -stallions are put their paces by their usual trainers as well as test riders, under the constant scrutiny of assessors. Klaus also explains his views as to where modern approaches to dressage training and judging are going wrong. To find out more about this DVD click the icons below the DVD image. After two years of basic training, Dablino (age 5) is a dressage horse is in the making. Systematic schooling, step by step, now focuses on the improvement of the half halt, distinct transition within the paces, lateral movements and flying changes preparing for Prix St. George. Klaus Balkenhol says: “The art of riding lies in achieving a great effect with very sensitive signals. This is known as sensitizing a horse. That means the horse concentrates on the rider, on the rider’s aids.” The video provides a masterful insight into dealing with a super talented horse who is also hyper sensitive to the competition environment. Klaus's daughter Annabel (Beli) takes on the ride of this special horse that Klaus fell in love with, The video tracks their progress and their challenges through to Prix St Georges success, where they are now poised to make the move up to Grand Prix. Klaus is open minded about his own continual learning and uses the help of world renowned behavioural expert, Linda Tellington-Jones.
“If I’m active on the horse, the horse must react.” Klaus Balkenhol To find out more about this DVD click the icons below the DVD image. For decades Klaus Balkenhol has successfully trained and developed numerous riders and horses to the Grand Prix level using the principles of classical riding. Within this, each horse and rider combination requires individual training methods in order to achieve their success. His work with master-class students like his daughter Beli (Anabel), Helen Langenhanenberg, Debbie McDonald, Mathias Rath and Günter Seidel, provides a picture of training methods that are always connected to the basics of horsemanship. We watch them train at home with Klaus and during the warmup at competitions. We also see them compete. And we follow the progress of the much advanced Dablino who is now 8 and starting Grand Prix work. Only with the utmost of patience and sensitivity are even the most talented horses produced correctly for the top level. Listenting to and watching Klaus train and ride, you appreciate what a master he is and his extraordinary horsemanship.
”All of the work with a horse should be a game, and should remain a game. Then it will become that much more successful. It requires a lot of patience and shouldn’t be taken so deadly serious. When one has arrived at this point, then later on everything looks easy.” Klaus Balkenhol To find out more about this DVD click the icons below the DVD image. Raised on a farm in the countryside, Klaus Balkenhol’s childhood was influenced by close contact with all kinds of animals on a daily basis. At that time, horses were primarily used for work, and before young Klaus could go riding, his horse had already put in a day’s work in the fields. As was typical in rural areas at the time, riders rode these same horses in dressage, showjumping and eventing competitions.
When he became a police squad officer, horses were once more his working partners, and with the police horse Rabauke, he entered into the world of Grand Prix Dressage. He trained dozens of horses to the highest level, and with his service horse, Goldstern, he was at the top in world rankings for many years, including winning two team gold medals in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. As a trainer of horses and riders, Klaus follows the rules of classical riding and horsemanship. His most important focus is always to maintain the basic gaits of the horse. And his credo is to do what is natural for the horse, using fairness in working with the equine partner. In this DVD we get to understand what makes Klaus Balkenhol the exceptional rider and trainer he is, and how his training philosophy developed. We also see him work and compete the two horses that made him. We watch him training Rabuake as a young man and riding out on police duties. We also understand the challenges Klaus faced during his rise to the top in Germany. Klaus rides the amazing Goldstern at home and we watch him winning team gold at the Olympics. Klaus Balkenhol's genius is evident throughout, as is his compassion for and understanding of horses at the very deepest level. To find out more about this DVD click the icons below the DVD image. This film documents the successful journey of Klaus Balkenhol (trainer to the US dressage team) and the team riders during the summer of 2006, culminating in the winning of the coveted bronze medal at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany. The documentary covers daily training during the five weeks of preparation prior to the competition, views behind the scenes, and exciting moments in the warm up arena just prior to the medal winning performance. It begins with the process of selection and once the team is finalised, then intensive training commences at Klaus Balkenhol's yard. It's a pleasure and a privalege to watch Guenter Seidel and the fabulous Aragon, who Klaus found as a show-jumper when giving a clinic in Eastern Europe. Aragon is stunning and razor sharp, reacting off the tiniest aids and Gunter rides him with amazing poise and stillness. Steffen Peters and Ravel, winners of the 2009 World Cup, are simply poetry to watch. He's big and powerful and performs with ease - the classic model of a dressage horse. The same can be said of Bretina, a stunning mare also found by Klaus and initially produced by him. Bretina is ridden by Debbie McDonald and they too are past World Cup winners. Watching the warmup at Aachen offers a stark contrast in the approach of top riders some riding classically and others using the controversial Rollkur. The difference is startling! This DVD has both English and German language options for you to choose from when you view and is in PAL format. Running time: 1 hour 2 minutes

His Highness was a legend, even in his own lifetime. At the 2002 licensing In Verden, Louise and Doug Leatherdale bid the highest price ever paid at an auction for a warm-blood stallion, in order to own this glorious horse. At Jens Meyer’s stallion station in Dorum he excelled himself as a stud and was systematically trained under the supervision of Klaus Balkenhol to become a top-class dressage horse. His equestrian career was unique in every way. He won his stallion performance test with ease, on an overall score of 149.24, and 155.04 points in the dressage phase. In the 2007 stud evaluation he gained fourth place out of more than 3500 stallions, with a breeding value of 166 and a target accuracy of 90%. His temperament was also legendary. He had an extraordinary calmness in almost all situations, including the show ring and his aptitude for training was unparalleled. Combined with fabulous conformation and paces, he was really the complete horse and a once in a lifetime horse to own. In demand from breeders all over the world, he successfully passed on of his characteristics. 16 of his sons left the arena in their first year with the seal of licensed stallions; a phenomenal result, which he achieved in just a few years. As a two-time finalist at the Bundeschampionate in Warendorf he demonstrated his talent as a dressage horse. As a seven-year-old he was already able to meet the standards required for the Prix St. George. This film accompanies him on his path to success and emphasizes how important it is, also for stud horses, to have a systematic training under saddle. His Highness was a name that suited him completely. In horse terms, he was regal indeed! Sadly, his life was cut short His Highness died tragically at the age of 8. This is an extraordinary story which must be watched! This DVD has both English and German language options for you to choose from when you view and is in PAL format. Running time: 1 hour

Egon von Neindorff was a man who has devoted his life to horses and to those who rode them. Considered on of the greatest riding instructors of all time, he was recently by a German equestrian magazine as the man who "guards the Grail of classical horsemanship..."
The film shows the master in action, teaching and training. Von Neindorff, who emphasised a nature-oriented approach to training, explains his views on horses and riding. Learning the art of classical horsemanship takes time and requires patience - and even in this fast-moving age, Egon von Neindorff was not prepared to make compromises. At his base in Germany, riders often came to train on his high school horses and take part in displays. Picture the Vienna Riding School; well what you will see in this video is Von Neindorff''s version, right down to the riding uniforms! It's priceless. This video is about an exceptional and inspiring teacher, and includes some fascinating footage of his spectacular equestrian achievements. Von Neindorff's legacy lives on through the people he trained though, sadly, he is no longer with us. This DVD is in English (although the cover is in German) and is available in PAL format.
